Lessons from the 2023 exam series

So I will start by saying this blog is purely my thoughts and conclusions after reading the AQA GCSE Geography 8035 examiner reports (so may not be relevant to other exam boards) and also my experience as a yr11 teacher last year. I’ve also added some ideas we have used which might help – but I’m sure there are plenty of other ways to do things.

Firstly the message across the reports on all of the three papers seems to be mainly twofold, firstly that the main issues are linked to command words and an inability to realise what the command word is actually asking the student to do. This seems to be more of a case with the more higher ranking command words for example ‘to what extent’ and ‘justify’ to name just a few. However there also does seem to have been a few issues with explain too.

The second key issue seems to have been the use of figures – both text and photographic/maps. Students haven’t often used the material well enough or have simply quoted/identified parts of the figure without going any further. This has stopped them accessing the top level 2 marks and level 3 marks. This is most definitely our main focus for next year as I think it will really push our 3-5 borderline students up.

There also seems to have been an issue with Geographical skills, predominantly completing graphs e.g the bar chart/pie chart on paper 3. But also the maths questions across the three papers – this year they included median, inter quartile range, range, mean as well as some basic calculations.

Paper 1 – physical geography

Reading this report, there seems to have been some positives, particularly following last year’s report. These include examination skills, geographical vocabulary and the ability to extend ideas for the 2 and 4m questions – but not the 6 and 9 as I will touch upon later.

As mentioned above command words are still proving to be an issue with students losing vital marks for missing the main part of the question. In paper these seem to be – explain, compare, suggest and discuss. There was also some issue with geographical terms such as economic/environmental and also physical (not human) factors. One way we’ve attempted to tackle this is including these command word definitions in our starter recall tasks as well as defining them when we ‘BUG’ the question. We also regularly assess key term definitions in class and use command words as we would other geographical terms. Key word bingo is still a firm favourite in my classroom, the students get very competitive and it helps tackle exam technique/BUG without them realising. I’ve added an example below.

Often with ‘discuss’ questions, students don’t actually do much discussion, the level 2 answers often tend to start to discuss but often there tends to be a paragraph on each ‘side’ of the discussion without any real discussion, this is mentioned also in the paper 3 section.

We use PDL (point, develop, link) which we’ve found helps add more discussion because the linking statement helps to revisit their opinion/the question intention. But I wonder if this helps our top end who probably need to be a bit more synoptic, I do know it really helps our grade 3-5 students who need the structure. The report suggests those who scores highly regularly used phrases such as ‘This means that’ or ‘as a result of this’ to connect development.

Another key point across the paper 1 report is the need for case study detail, this appears numerous times across paper 2 as well. Often students are lacking access to the top level 2 marks and level 3 marks because their answers are vague/too generic. I’ve shared below some examples of how we have used our starters to recap case study specifics.

This example above was used for revision but we use these regularly throughout the course to help students remember. We also try to use the same symbols for simular things to add familiarity.

A common theme across all paper reports is the lack of being able to use a stimulus both when it was text and when it was a photograph or map. Across all the figure questions it seems students often quoted parts of text or identified information from the figures without really doing anything with it. Lifting relevant information is although helpful to start a discussion it often doesn’t gain student marks. ‘The most effective answers took clues from the effects given and developed ideas fully’ (qu1.4 paper 1). This is clearly something we need to focus our students on moving forward. Qu 2.9 (paper 1) used a text stimulus and again the report suggests students copied parts ‘without seizing the clues within it and developing the information’. Using IDEAL may help here – although I think the questions have to be thought through carefully. Maybe using some figures from the exam question with the question themese within the ideal questions… an example of IDEAL is below, although I’ve not done the above. Maybe one of my next jobs!

Another area of focus needs to be formation of processes – it’s clear from section C (and also 1.11) that students need to be clearer with processes. Also important students have up to date knowledge on processes – this was mentioned in 1.11 ‘vital to have a secure understanding of plate tectonic theory, ideally updated’ – if you are unsure where to start with this, there’s a few Teaching Geography articles you could read on this – one by Alistair Hamil, who also shares some fantastic diagrams on tectonics in the tweet below.

Another comment from the examiner report I found useful linked to process formation is the need to use correct terminology to describe the sequence. It seems there were some errors on qu 3.5 and 4.5 linked to the sequence being incorrect and there was a lack of explanation using key terms. Read, edit, improve might be a good activity to use here, see Paul’s example below.

Within the examiner report for paper 1 there is also comments about handwriting, surely this is the case across all three papers (as its the same candidates) although it’s not mentioned. Handwriting is a hard one to tackle, some strategies I’m sure you are aware of include printing key words so examiners can see clearly the use. Some students might also be entitled to a computer/scribe – often this needs to be their usual way of working so it’s worth highlight handwriting issues to your SEND department as early as possible. They may need to provide evidence that the use of a computer is their normal way of working.

Something also to note here is if students are entitled to a scribe do they know to spell words aloud, check their work after etc, I’m sure they do as its common across all papers. But on the scribe cover sheet they have to state this and for geography where there are SPaG marks available they will lose these if they don’t dictate the spelling and punctuation on those 9 mark questions.

Paper 2 – Human Geography

This report is much shorter than paper 1 and although I think the key takeaways are similar there are still some important points to note.

The biggest being that once students have included their specific case study information they need to actually do something with it. For example 1.6, 2.4 and 3.4 where it seems the top answers used and applied their knowledge well, but there wasn’t much in the middle.

Again there was issues with the figure questions, with few students achieving level 3 and most being kept in low level 2, due to a lack of development of the clues from the figure. It seems that students can use their own knowledge in a familiar example fairly well, but when asked to apply what they know about development to unfamiliar places they struggle, even with.the use of a resource. There is clearly scope here to ensure students can use their geographical thinking and apply it to similar places. I have some ideas on how we can do this, and will blog some of them (hopefully) soon.

The mathematical skills questions also seemed to provide more of an issue on paper 2, there is a list of Geographical skills on the aqa website which may be useful to glance over. Something we’ve been doing this year is working with maths to use the Geographical content for some of their mathematical questions in their lessons. And when students haven’t done well on the ‘maths’ questions within a mock/assessment, maths have them used them soon after to show the correct way of working. Paper 3 – Geographical Skills

The report for paper 3 is similar to that of the other two in that it states there is still an issue with students using the resource and extending the information given. This limited those students being able to access top level 2 and level 3 marks.

There was again an issue with lots of students missing the graph questions (I.e 2.1) – a pattern we’ve seen on previous years but also a shame as the question itself was really straightforward. Weve added lots of skills type questions into our KS3 assessments in the hope that this familiarity will help with these style of questions at GCSE.

As mentioned above the idea of a discussion was also fairly weak in paper 3, particularly questions 2.6 and 3, which limited students to low level 2. The examiner report suggests that student should ensure ‘the stronger part of the evidence will be used to support the chosen position. If this approach (considering advantages and disadvantages) is used, writing a conclusion which clearly brings the discussion back to sippet the chosen position is a useful strategy.’ The important part to takeaway is for the 9mark question students should use the whole resource booklet and consider a synoptic point of view.

As with the issue evaluation the longer fieldwork questions had similar issues to the 6 and 9m questions on paper 1 and 2. Some students missed the opportunity to discuss and/or identify what the command word was asking. That being said q4.9 was generally answered well with some use of data to justify the statements given about the relationship between data sets.

The familiar fieldwork section clearly suggested that students often missed the purpose of the question I.e 5.3 where they talked about data collection instead of presentation and 5.2 where students didn’t justify the reasons for their data collection methods. Many students described their results rather than linked the accuracy of their data collection to their results and conclusions. Which meant they generally got into level 2 but couldn’t get more than 4 or 5 marks. A key take away ‘the nine mark question within the familiar fieldwork section is quite complex and always demands links between key starnads of the enquiry process.’ This is not a new style of question and has been used previously (although not for the past few years due to the lack of fieldwork due to examination changes), so there is clearly a bit of work to be done here at ensuring students can make links across the six enquiry strands.

Mastery and Retention Strategies

I have worked quite tirelessly on trying to ensure our students constantly revisit work they have already done. We already do a lot of this through our Geog your Memory homework sheets (which I need to blog about again as it has massively evolved since I last blogged).

I have shared a word document with some blank templates and I will try and credit the people where the ideas have come from but I can’t remember all of them (if it was you – thank you – send me a message and I will update). I will also try and add some photographs/examples of populated sheets but most are at school and I am not there on this lovely sunday morning!

1. Give me 5 – you give the students 5 topics and they populate the grid with 5 facts for each one. If they can’t think of 5, I let them use their exercise books/textbooks to complete but they have to write it in a different colour. (thanks to @KKNTeachLearn for this one – as well as a few others)

2. Knowledge quilt/ fact cloud – populate the grid with facts/numbers and students colour code them (I have blogged about this before as part of this post) – I love using it at the end of a module/section to encourage students to reflect but it works well whenever its used to be honest! (another one from @KKNTeachLearn – one of the best!)

3. Retrieval grids – I have blogged about this before too, you can read it in the same post as above – the idea came from Kate Jones@87History – if you haven’t read her book about retrieval I would encourage you do! But you give students a range of questions, making the higher level/older topics worth more points. This works particularly well if you have a competitive group!

4. Where am I? – this idea came from Tom Highnet @GeographyTom, when I saw him present it at Research Ed, its linked to retrieval if you use places students have already studied the location of, but obviously you could also use it with an atlas to encourage them to find certain countries.

5. Key word bingo – I love a good key word/bingo session, quite simply give students some key words to define. You could do this using one topic or a range, you could extend it by getting them to categorise them into topics if you use words from mulitiple. You could also use photographs/cartoons/images to do this task in reverse. There is an example below.

You can also use freebingocards to make a class set of different bingo cards and ask students to define the words. An example is below.

6. A to Z – quite straight forward students fill the alphabet with key words/facts – as above if you encourage them to do it across topics, an easy way to extend/apply is to categorise per topic. Once its complete they could include each word in a sentence or define each one. You can do this one similar to the knowledge quilt (to save your time, use one of your students from one class for another class) and ask students to define or work out the case study or topic they are from!

7. Multiple Choice – not sure I need to explain this one! I have been trying to improve my use of multiple choice questions and I loved this from @MrThorntonTeach last week! You can read it here but there are also so many brilliant ‘How to’ pages here.

8. Find and Fix – This idea was from Lesley Ann McDermott – basically you give students a grid of statements/facts – anything you want really and get them to find the errors. I saw this amazing example from @Miss_Roche_Geog just before the summer which looks brilliant!

9. Rubiks cube – works similar to the other key word strategies, you fill one of the rubiks cubes with key words, and the students sort them into three categories/topics and add them to the other rubiks cube. Here is a fab example from @KKNTeachLearn but the original idea is from @MrFitzHist

10. Ideal – I won’t blog about this one again, you can read the original blog here. But using photographs/videos can remind students of an example you have studied. Also good practise for figure questions in an exam.

11. Hexagons – how do images or cartoons link together, students annotate the link, there are plenty of brilliant examples on twitter but I love this one from @k_m_campbell

What isn’t working…

So I am very guilty of sharing lots of things that work well, resources I love, ideas I have tried, blogs I have read. But I’m probably not the best at sharing what isnt working very well. And to be perfectly honest, lots isn’t right now.

Why dont we/I share the things that go wrong, maybe because I’m probably embarrassed that it hasn’t worked as well as I had liked. Possibly because I blame myself for it not being successful (we really need to not do this – there are often a lot of other factors involved – including 30 little or big people) or just maybe because I forget. When I’m having a bad day one of the last things I want to do is share it on twitter, normally I want to bury my head in the sand and pretend it never happened.

I dont though… When something hasn’t worked I tend to sit down (when I’m actually in school – my hours commute is brilliant for this) and try and work out why it hasnt worked, adapt it and try again. Sometimes I go back to the research I read originally and see if there is some other suggestions, some other people who have tried to do it and found similar problems. Maybe think about how I could try the same thing with a different class, different year group. But I am also incredibly guilty of keeping this a secret.

I think I’m quite good at sharing the issues I’ve found or the problems I have faced with my department- there is only 2 of them and they are brilliant at suggesting changes, often they are willing to try it with their classes and feedback too. But I’m definitely not very good at sharing it publically. There is too much teacher bashing going on already, too many people telling people they are getting things wrong and definitely too much pressure from ourselves during what is a bit of a crazy time. But maybe we should….

Over the past few weeks I have found being at home incredibly hard, I love my husband and my son (and my dog) but I also love being in the classroom. Being in my little geography bubble, talking about hurricanes or urbanisation and ultimately trying to make sure the little people (most who are actually bigger than me) love Geography. Trying to do this from 35 miles away, via a computer screen, while also trying to look after a one year old is hard.

I’m not sure, in fact actually I know that, they can’t feel my enthusiasm for our topics or see my passion for Geography. That they also have a lot going on, just as we do. But do they still know I care? I send them messages and get very few (if any) replies. The online world of teaching almost feels quite lonely…

At no point in my career have I had a day where everything has been amazing, 8 years and there has always been something I’d change about a lesson or an activity. And for those people who (like me at the moment) feel like they arent doing a brilliant job maybe it would be nice to see more people share more things that haven’t worked.

Either to remind people that they aren’t the only ones having a bad day/week or maybe because someone somewhere might have had the same thing happen and might be able to share some ideas to help. I also think its incredibly important to let others see that side of us.

So from now on, I’m going to try and share more things that haven’t worked well, as well as those things that have. Maybe it will help someone else to do the same and improve their practice. But more importantly maybe it will stop me overthinking it until 3am….

Raising better Geographers…

So I thought I’d give you my two pennies worth on the new GCSEs now my students have sat the first exam.

The negativity surrounding the GCSE reforms, and more recently the latest exam, has upset and angered me for a few reasons…

Firstly, I think no-one really loves such a big change (particularly when it’s everything at once) – not when we’ve spent hours and hours planning schemes of work and lessons to match the old specification, almost becoming experts at teaching students the tricks to getting the highest marks for each question strand. But actually, the change excited me. I saw it as a new challenge, a new opportunity to re-do our Key Stage 4 curriculum and refresh it at Key Stage 3. I talked (positively most of the time) about the new opportunities it would give us and thought of ways in which we could embed the skills these students needed at GCSE further down, without I believe narrowing the curriculum and taking the ‘fun’ out of the classroom.

Secondly, the new curriculum allows our students to become far better geographers than we probably were at their age. For example, it forces students to evaluate the successes of sustainable transport schemes, analyse responses to tropical storms and earthquakes, allows them to justify why some management techniques in the rainforest are more effective than others, and encourages them to apply their knowledge of examples they know and have learnt about to other unseen places. I honestly believe that by being able to do this they are far better geographers than those who can explain the formation of a plate boundary and describe an urban regeneration project.

Over the years I have most definitely been guilty of trying to make activities the engagement and it was only recently on reflection that I feel I was doing geography a disservice. I am incredibly passionate about geography and that is what gets students interested, not whether they are doing a card sort or a decision making exercise. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that there is a time and a place for a wide range of activities but the activity itself shouldnt be the focus – instead the geography should take pride of place. As it’s that subject knowledge that captivates interest and encourages students to question the world around us.

My year 8 students constantly impress me, they use words like social inequality, poverty and mitigation, they refer to places as less developed rather than ‘poor’, they discuss using evidence from a range of sources, they are able to articulatly explain their opinions with justification. It is these skills which allows them to be excellent geographers.

I think most importantly the new GCSE reforms have allowed us to widen the curriculum, spend time analysing and discussing different events, using a wide range of examples to look at the different responses to natural hazards and getting students to think deeper and harder about what they know.

So when thinking about how ‘hard’ the new GCSE’s are… Rather than moan and state that they are unfair and how they are set out to trip students up, I ask you to think about how you can better prepare students to deal with these skills and these questions.

Because, let’s be honest here, how many people once leaving school need to be able to explain the processes that happen at a plate boundary? I imagine unless they are working in the geography field – the number is tiny. However, ask yourself how many people need to analyse something or justify why option a is better than option b, evaluate a range of options and choose the most successful – I reckon that number is huge. We are not forcing students to be able to answer hard exam questions, we are giving them transferrable skills they can use for the rest of their lives.

I don’t believe that everyone has to take this change as a new opportunity but I do believe you should.

An epic journey…

So last month I was lucky enough to present at the Geographical Association Conference in Sheffield, I presented during lunch time at a teacher to teacher session and to be honest I am still surprised people came!

We have five years (and sometimes only really two or three) to turn students into excellent geographers. I shared during my presentation some of the ways in which I have increased challenge at KS3 (and to be honest KS4) as well as things that I feel have made a difference in my classroom.

Skills

Something that has hugely changed under the curriculum reforms is both the skills which students need to be able to use, but also the way in which they are assessed. To begin we completed a skills audit (availableย here) we complete within lesson times. We did this to find out which skills we did often and which we did rarely. This was a great starting point as it also showed us that we use more skills during physical topics and less during human, but also we seem to love using choropleth maps and lacked a lot of other skills. Once we realised where we lacked certain skills we could then add them into lessons. So for example, as you can see in the image below, we didn’t originally use longitude and latitude anyway. So we added it into all our lessons on examples/case studies and students used longitude and latitude to locate them.

Mathsย 

I have taken it upon myself to add maths wherever possible, so whether that is working out rates of erosion, calculating city growth or even using maths codes to decode titles/key words it is in my lessons. One of the skills we use lots are climate graphs and its so easy to add a few maths questions in.ย Picture3.png

Fieldworkย 

Unfortunately starting at a new school in September meant that, amongst a few other things, adding in fieldwork to our curriculum has seemed to be at the bottom of my to do list. However I have used a range of different tasks to encourage fieldwork skills, for example we have looked and discussed how we could carry out fieldwork during our climate change module – some of the students came up with brilliant ideas for data collection – which I have added to our SOL. I have added an image below with a starter task we used during our urbanisation module. We also have added in fieldwork style tasks – e.g. working out pebble roundness from images rather than actual pebbles (not quite the same but I don’t think all my students would attend fieldwork even if I had arranged it this year).

Pre-release booklet

Another addition to the new specification (for AQA anyway) is the addition of a pre-release booklet, given to students 12 weeks prior to the exam. In order to allow students to practise the skills needed for this section of the paper, we have added one to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 end of year exams. We produced an activity booklet which students can complete outside of lesson time and they can then use the pre-release booklet in their end of year exam. We have reduced the amount of content based on the year group but so far students are interacting with the material (given 4 weeks before exam) well.

6 ideas in 6 minutes…

I was lucky enough to attend and present at the Geographical Association conference last weekend (search #gaconf18 and you will see how brilliant it was), I will write another post to summarise my conference presentation but I thought I would summarise my TM Presentation for those who weren’t there and for those who were and would like to know more.

I decided to share my favourite 6 ideas at the moment so here goes…

Idea 1 – Ideal Analysisย 

This idea originated from Rebekah Chew @MissChewBeka

But if you just want a quick summary – students move through the command words, they go through the letters which increase in difficulty, you could also change apply to assess and explain to evaluate, but I tend to find my students struggle to differentiate between explain and describe and I find this activity really helps.

Idea 2 – Excellent Geographer Rules

Again to summarise, I use rules to guide students on structure, with pictures/maps/graphs I tend to print them underneath the source or give them a sheet to stick in to accompany their own writing but they also work well in the form of structure strips.

Idea 3 – Speak Like a Geographerย 

The original idea came from Kate Stockings @Geography_kesย – I have had a ‘speak like a geographer’ display in my classroom for a long time now,

But while I have found my students writing has improved hugely, their oral explanations are lacking in detail and accuracy, so when I saw the ‘speak like a historian’ activity developed by Karen Knight @KKNTeachLearnย I knew I had to replicate it for Geography.

I adapted the points idea slightly as I find my student use the word ‘like’ all the time, so added a column to include that and hopefully limit the number of times they use ‘like’ and ‘urm’

Idea 4 – Read Edit Improve

This idea is the brainwave of Paul Logue @plogueyย and I find it helps my students reflect on model answers better than just reading and marking them. It also helps because my students seem to enjoy being overly critical of other writing so seem to get great enjoyment out of complaining about how bad it really is. I find it also shows my weaker students how to start/structure their work as I tend to keep an appropriate structure but make lots of other intentional mistakes…

I have also edited this slightly to use it for poor descriptions of graphs and also poor explanations.Picture2

This works particularly well when finding lots of vague descriptions of graphs which don’t use data. Again as mentioned above, my students seem to enjoy picking holes in ‘my’ writing.

Idea 5 – Fact Clouds

Another brilliant adaptation from Karen Knightย  @KKNTeachLearnย – who calls them knowledge quilts.

Quite simply, I give students a grid full of specific facts and they categorise which ones are relevant to the examples we have studied and then use the completed table to answer the exam questions. Again it seems to work well with getting students to write more specifically about examples we have used.

Idea 6 – Retrieval Grids

This idea came from Kate Jones @87Historyย and I adapted slightly to suit both my Key Stage 3 and 4 classes. I think it works brilliantly at encouraging mastery over time and allows us to cover (and discuss) topics studied in the past. I shared some other examples in my presentation but they all follow this simple idea.

IDEAL Analysis

So I originally stole this idea from Rebekah Chew when she shared it at a PIXL conference a few years ago and instantly thought it was brilliant.

The idea is that the command words get harder as you go down so I is identify, D is describe, E is explain, A is apply and L is Link. It works particularly well at showing the difference between the command words as well as challenging students to think around/harder about a source. The link is clearly the hardest skill but often the bit students think they have done when they haven’t – so often it provides a brilliant discussion point.

It’s also very easy to differentiate, producing sentence starters to help students challenge the different tasks. An example of one I produced for year 9 on China is below.

And two different worksheets one with sentence starters to get students started – I often find this is the biggest problem, and the other with some thinking help. I don’t always produce a worksheet and often find it’s a really useful to discuss (and add to work) as we go through.

The ideal analysis is also very useful in subjects where there is a source to be used. I have seen it work well in History and RE, both where students needed to use similar skills to those in Geography to pick out points from photographs/sources. It has also been used in MFL to assist with a writing task based on using a picture as a stimulus for some writing in French/Spanish.

I love IDEAL for Geography in the news as pictured above – it’s so quick and easy to do and I have found students really like the structure it gives them. The one above was used as a starter for Hurricane Irma in September and really got students thinking about the different ideas linked to both tropical storms but also the effects and responses. It very easily allowed students to recap on their knowledge of tropical storms and we also brought in the causes in a discussion.

Below are some other examples but it’s such a usable and flexible structure that I am sure there are a million other ways you could use it.

Enquiring minds…

KS3 homework menus – I was a bit behind on this ‘trend’, but I have been using them for the last few years. I like the fact that they extended topics and allowed for thinking on content that we can’t always fit in to the scheme of work.

I have adapted them over time, originally giving students lots of choice – around 12-15 tasks and eventually narrowing them down to 8 tasks all of varying difficulty. The tasks originally were not specific enough, and often worded shortly so they could all fit on one sheet. Now however they used command words such as describe and explain, they offer some suggestions as to how the task could be structured but most importantly the number of homework referrals across the department has decreased dramatically.

Below is an example of our homework menu for our topic on the Middle East.

I like homework menus because it takes away the panic of trying to find a ‘useful’ homework at the end of a lesson (or before it starts) but also it allows for so much more flexibility for both students and teachers. I have blogged previously on our approach to homework being meaningful and useful at Key Stage 4 but it should not stop there.

Homework menu’s also allow students to come to some lessons with different contexts – for example when studying population policies we refer to China’s One Child Policy – but one of the homework menu tasks was to look at the pro-natal policy in France. This meant one of the students came to my lesson with so much valuable information to share with the class, it boosted his confidence and students were interested – lots of them wanted to ask him (and me) questions and most of them went away and chose that homework task the week after because they were genuinely interested.

Here is an example of our recent homework menu for India. The tasks are categorised into four different sections and students can choose a different task each week.

This example is far from perfect and as we go through the topics we are tweaking all of the homework tasks on each menu. For example when we studied population, one of the lesson tasks was very similar to one of the homework tasks and therefore I don’t feel the homework challenged and interested the students any more than they already were. But I think as we look at the homework students produce we can see the misconceptions, the tasks they find harder and move things around, adapt and edit tasks.

At the moment we have insisted all students do one from each ‘row’, however we have discussed how we could differentiate further, insisting our highest ability students do more from the top than the bottom and vice-versa. For now though I am just enjoying seeing what the students produce.

Our homework menu’s always contain more homework tasks than we need – so they also allow us to use them for stretch and challenge. (I will blog about our use of raffle tickets at some point but students can receive credit for doing extra tasks to enhance their understanding, this is embedded at Key Stage 4 but we definitely need to work further on it at Key Stage 3.) Students can always do more homework than needed and I honestly never believed some students would, but they do. Some of my Year 8’s couldn’t decide between homework tasks on the final week so did two. This is why I like homework menus the most – they give students choice about issues surrounding our topic and let them choose their interests while still staying ‘on topic’.

I think our next task is to produce help sheets which can be referred to on SMHW and potentially some form of peer assessment sheets to allow for easier marking and reducing our workload.

#ExcellentGeographer Rules

Inspired by Mark Enser and his many brilliant blog posts on how the teachers in his department expect excellence – we have really tried to raise the expectation in our classrooms.

One of the biggest problems I have found with year 11 mocks are students losing easy marks for completing graphs correctly, describing patterns on maps/graphs and also using sources in their answers. Since structure strips have worked so well at providing a loose checklist style list, I decided I would trial ‘excellent geographer rules’ – including bullet pointed ideas that I would expect an ‘excellent geographer’ to include.

Like structure strips we have clear support at Key Stage 3 and early Key Stage 4 but this is withdrawn slowly throughout year 10 and hopefully by the time the students get there the rules should be applied consistently because it will almost be second nature.

Here is an example of the rules given to students when describing a climate graph. The student in this example then highlighted her own work to show where she had met the success criteria.

We have used this successfully since September now and I have clear evidence from our mid term assessments with year 8 that they are working. Students who got no marks for these source based questions at the start of the year, did much better by assesment 2 and 3. I also find it stops the worry of how to start. Particularly because we always use the GCSE acronym – even with year 7.

Another idea I found on twitter from @Geography_meg is CLOCC here – I have adapted it slightly but still used it to encourage excellence – this time in terms of describing location.

The rules task also works well with peer assessment, it gives students a starting point of what to look for in an answer. They can even highlight someone else’s work to show where they have followed the ‘rules’. It is also interesting to ask students to write their own rules – I used this during a lesson on the UK ageing population, students decided what they thought a piece of writing on this particular topic should include. We then listed them on the whiteboard and students used them to structure their work. The example below is structured on SpAce peer assessment by @Mrs_humanities here.

Another way this task can be extended is by using mark schemes for exam questions and allowing students to write their own rules using the mark scheme. Particularly with the bigger focus on sources in the new GCSE exam papers.

New Curriculum

This year I started a new job, I had been HOD in my old school covering maternity leave and although it was my department during that time, I knew I had to give it back 12 months later and therefore didn’t make any real curriculum changes. My new job allowed me to start from scratch (I didn’t change much to begin with), not wanting to be that person who started and changed everything in September but in hindsight I wish I had. Instead I kept things as they were and about a week into September decided the curriculum wasn’t working – it was a ‘spiral curriculum’ and meant that students studied topics under themes – in our case the themes were countries.ย  I felt the curriculum didn’t give students enough time to grasp any big ideas, and there was a lack of continuous ideas – leading to a lack of challenge and often a lack of any independent work. For example tropical storm formation and an example taught in an hour and no room for any depth/extra lesson time due to our cumulative assessment model.

It wasn’t working – students didn’t love Geography, SLT felt it the lessons had no links and it was almost a random assortment of lessons – which I tend to find does happen with topics based on a country. Most of all results had gone down over recent years. I don’t think my department will disagree with this – or feel angry that I have written it down as I think they felt the same, a lot of change over recent years both staff and curriculum had meant that people brought resources they had to save time.

We are not an academy and therefore have to follow the National Curriculum Programme of Study – if you haven’t ever had a look its here. We also follow the AQA Specification at GCSE so I knew that our new curriculum had to combine the two. Our Year 7 and 8 Curriculum plan is below. I am not convinced it will stay this way next year but for now this is our plan.

We have taken out a map skills module and instead embedded the skills instead into most of the modules in Year 7 and 8. I strongly believe that the best way to teach skills is by applying them to context. I also think the start of Year 7 is the best time to get students loving Geography, and to be honest I am not sure a traditional map skills module is going to create a huge love affair. As well as standard map skills we have tried to encourage the use of a range of different skills, there are maths and fieldwork skills in both the coasts and rivers module, planned fieldwork to our local ecosystem in the ecosystems module and I am hoping to do some more local fieldwork as part of the module on climate change. We have also embedded a pre-release style booklet linked to both end of year exams and students will receive this 4 weeks before their exam.

I think there is a clear link to both the Programme of Study and our GCSE course but also allows enough breadth for students to really enjoy their Geography lessons. We are hoping to embed some of the key foundations of GCSE such as the structure of the earth, features and landforms linked to erosion as well as causes of uneven development and urbanisation in LICs. Ultimately I believe that Geography at Key Stage 3 should be about enjoyment – adding in specific topic based modules such as India, as well as using events in the news regularly is something which I think will foster this love.

There is so much more to say on this matter so I will finish this in another post, but I wanted to give a bit of an outline to our KS3 curriculum, It is most definitely a constant working process and as such is always a draft.
